Are Japanese townscapes truly beautiful...? It is said that Japan, before the Edo period, boasted world-class, beautiful townscapes. However, after the war, with the onset of rapid economic growth, Japanese townscapes changed dramatically. Due to extreme material shortages, mass production and low-profit, high-volume sales were embraced, resulting in a bleak landscape where towns across Japan offered the same streetscapes and the same selection of goods. Perhaps the pursuit of convenience and efficiency alone has created the current state of Japanese townscapes. At Oikanet, we aim to collaborate with builders in each region to uncover the unique charm and character of each area, proposing better, more authentic Japanese living environments. Furthermore, we hope that by strengthening the proposal capabilities of builders, they will become builders who can contribute to the development of their respective regions.
